How secure is Wave & Pay?

The Wave & Pay cards are debit/credit cards with a tiny radio transmitter embedded in the chip. This allows them to communicate with a point-of-sale terminal. The cardholder 'waves' their card a few centimeters from the card-reader to make a payment. The transaction is completed in less than 0.5 seconds.

The cards use wireless communication technology. In accordance with industry standards and specifications, payment instructions can be exchanged securely between a Contactless chip card and an EMV card acceptance terminal. Wave & Pay is a secure way to pay. The chip on the card uses the highest level of cryptography to protect the payment.

The transaction is processed through the same secure network as chip and PIN and after a certain number of transactions security checks will be made by asking consumers to enter their PIN number.
