When will Wave & Pay be introduced?

Contactless technology has been available for transactions of £10 or under since September 2007 in selected areas of London. Customers simply hold their upgraded card up to a secure reader to make their payment at participating shops and vending machines. The launch involved a mix of retailers and selected cardholders who regularly use their cards in these postal areas either to buy goods or take cash out of cash machines.

Sandra Alzetta, Visa Europe Senior VP for consumer market development, said ‘the aim is for a cashless Olympic Games in London in 2012.

Spectators and participants at the London Olympics 2012 will be issued with cards to pay for purchases less than £10 such as taxis and food and drinks inside the venue.
